How the date is set
Black Friday has no official date of its own. It is simply the Friday after US Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of November. Cyber Monday follows three days later. Retailers in the UK, Europe, Australia and the Middle East now use the same Friday, even though they do not celebrate Thanksgiving.
Where the name came from
Philadelphia police used “Black Friday” in the early 1960s to describe the traffic and crowds of the day after Thanksgiving. The more cheerful explanation, that it is the day retailers move from loss (“in the red”) to profit (“in the black”), came later.
When sales really start
Many big retailers now begin discounts weeks earlier, often in early November, and run them through Cyber Monday. Prices on the day itself are not always the lowest of the season, so it is worth watching prices of what you want for a few weeks beforehand.
