Why November 11?
The fighting of World War I stopped at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, when the armistice between the Allies and Germany took effect: the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The United States first marked the anniversary as Armistice Day in 1919. It became a federal holiday in 1938, and in 1954 Congress renamed it Veterans Day to honour veterans of all wars.
For a few years in the 1970s the holiday was moved to the fourth Monday of October. Because so many people kept marking November 11 anyway, it returned to its original date in 1978.
Who gets the day off
Veterans Day is a federal holiday, so federal offices, post offices and most banks close. Schools and private employers decide for themselves, and many stay open. When November 11 is a Saturday, the federal holiday is observed on Friday, November 10; when it is a Sunday, on Monday, November 12. The table above shows the observed day for each year.
Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Remembrance Day
Memorial Day, on the last Monday of May, honours those who died in military service. Veterans Day thanks everyone who has served, living or dead. The UK and Commonwealth countries mark the same anniversary as Remembrance Day, with two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on November 11 and services on Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday of November.
