How the date is set
Cyber Monday follows the calendar of US Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of November. Count four days on from Thanksgiving and you reach Cyber Monday, so it always lands between November 26 and December 2.
Where it came from
The name was coined in 2005 by Shop.org, part of the US National Retail Federation, after retailers noticed that online sales jumped on the Monday after Thanksgiving, when people were back at work with fast internet connections. Today it is one of the biggest online shopping days of the year, and many shops run their offers from Black Friday through Cyber Monday as a single long weekend.
Making the most of it
Deals often go live at midnight Pacific time, which is 3 a.m. on the US East Coast and 8 a.m. in London. If you are shopping from outside the US, check when a sale starts in your own time zone, and compare prices over the few weeks before, because many discounts start earlier than the day itself.
