How the date is set
Because it is always the third Sunday in June, Father’s Day falls between June 15 and June 21. Several countries use other dates: Italy, Spain and Portugal celebrate on March 19, St. Joseph’s Day; Australia and New Zealand on the first Sunday of September; Germany on Ascension Day; and Thailand on December 5.
A short history
Sonora Smart Dodd organised the first Father’s Day in Spokane, Washington, in 1910, wanting to honour her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own. The idea spread slowly; it became a permanent national holiday in the US only in 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.
