What 12 weeks is used for
Twelve weeks is 84 days, almost three months. It is a common length for training programmes and university terms, the job-protected leave allowed each year under the US Family and Medical Leave Act, and a milestone in pregnancy, where the first trimester is usually said to end at about 12 to 13 weeks, counted from the first day of the last period. For due dates, use a pregnancy calculator or ask your midwife or doctor.
How the date is counted
The start date is day 0. Adding 84 days moves forward one calendar day at a time, through weekends, holidays, month ends and leap days, and the date you land on is the answer. Because 12 weeks is a whole number of weeks, the answer is always the same weekday as the start date.
